About The Role

Hours: Full-time, 35 hours per week

Location: Holyrood

The SNP Parliamentary Group of MSPs is looking to employ a full time Senior Communications Officer with immediate effect.

Desirable candidates will have experience of actively promoting news stories and setting media agenda, as well as experience of using online media to communicate key messages and target new audiences. Applicants should have a firm knowledge of current Scottish politics at all levels, the Scottish Parliamentary system and the Scottish media.

The Senior Communications Officer will play a key role in the running of the Communications team with oversight of the overall media strategy and output. The role involves an element of assisting the Communications Manager with supervising the team – including organising workflow, and training Communication Officers.

MSPs are employers in their own right. Under their employment, you will become part of a team supporting them in carrying out their duties. You'll work in a dynamic and fast paced environment to provide an outstanding service for constituents.

Responsibilities

  • Assist the Communications Manager with the running and supervision of the team with oversight of the overall media strategy and output.
  • Assist with training and development within the team.
  • Produce materials that effectively convey the SNP Parliamentary Group of MSPs aims to the general public and media.
  • Draft and sign-off press releases.
  • Respond to media enquiries from journalists and timely manner.
  • Keep up to date with current media developments.
  • Building and maintain relationships with MSPs, journalists and stakeholders.
  • Correspond with constituents and local campaign groups.
  • Produce high quality press briefings, speeches, presentations and written materials.
  • Identify potential media opportunities and act as media contact.
  • Organise and arrange interviews and press conferences as specified.
  • Identify forthcoming events, in turn promoting the SNP Parliamentary Group of MSPs work.
  • Represent the SNP Parliamentary Group of MSPs in dealing with media and providing statements where appropriate.
  • Follow all media outlets to capture relevant developments as they happen.
  • Develop creative new engagement methods for social media accounts.
  • Review social media trends and brief the SNP Parliamentary Group of MSPs in issues of relevance to their parliamentary role.

About You

Requirements

  • Previous experience of working in the Scottish Parliament is advantageous although not essential.
  • Applicants must have an interest in and firm knowledge of current Scottish politics with the confidence to represent Members in a media-related capacity.
  • Be capable in monitoring media developments and sourcing information from a range of channels.
  • Have the ability to foster good working relationships with confidence to understand how the media world operates.
  • Be creative in designing and communicating over a range of formats on different media platforms.
  • Have flexibility using relevant IT skills and writing styles, covering both traditional and newer forms of media.
  • Be a confident communicator with ability to build strong working relationships with a range of people including senior politicians, journalists and officials.
  • Experience of supervising teams is advantageous although not essential
