Working for a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP)

MSPs are employers in their own right. Under their employment, you will become part of a team supporting them in carrying out their duties. You'll work in a dynamic and fast paced environment to provide an outstanding service for constituents.

Patrick Harvie MSP is recruiting for a Community Engagement Manager in his regional team, based in Glasgow. The working hours are open to negotiation with the successful candidates. Applications for job share or other flexible arrangements will be welcomed. Full time posts are currently 37 hours per week, but may be reduced depending on negotiations across the Green Group.

This post will normally be based in the Glasgow office, off Gallowgate. Working from home remains an expectation for at least some of the time in the current circumstances, and may continue to be an option in the longer term. There will be occasional meetings in Glasgow and Edinburgh. All these roles may involve periods of working alone, as well as with the rest of the team.

This is an exciting opportunity for passionate, well-organised people with some experience of working in an office environment, a public-facing role or in local campaigning.

The successful applicant will work flexibly in the regional office supporting the team with shared priorities, including occasional absence cover within the local office, as well as working closely with local office staff, volunteers and interns as required. The responsibilities below are not exhaustive, and the candidate will be expected to carry out other reasonable and appropriate duties as required.

Candidates will have experience in campaigns, media, research or policy work in a comparable environment; a strong understanding of Glasgow’s political landscape and local issues, and confident communication skills and organisation. Candidates must be able to fully support the MSP in carrying out their Parliamentary role.

Responsibilities

●        Developing a community engagement strategy, and working with the rest of the team to   deliver it

●        Monitoring relevant current affairs, local issues, and parliamentary business

●        Developing and maintaining contacts across the region

●        Coordinating regional campaigns, including traditional media output, digital/social media activity, local events, and contributing to parliamentary activity such as motions, questions and debates

●        Attending local visits, meetings and other events, with or on behalf of Patrick Harvie

●        Delivering or commissioning research projects, producing policy documents, briefings, draft speeches and similar material

●        Working with the rest of the Green MSPs and their staff team on shared priorities, including occasional absence cover within the local office

●        Working closely with local office staff, volunteers and interns as required

●        Other reasonable and appropriate duties as required
