Working for a Member of the Scottish Parliament (MSP)

MSPs are employers in their own right. Under their employment, you will become part of a team supporting them in carrying out their duties. You'll work in a dynamic and fast paced environment to provide an outstanding service for constituents.

Responsibilities

  • Keeping your knowledge of policy areas and local issues up to date and briefing MSP when needed
  • Building and maintaining relationships with stakeholders
  • Identifying, setting up and attending engagement opportunities e.g. town hall events, round tables, local fairs/events etc
  • Triaging enquiries via the MSP inbox
  • Corresponding with constituents and local campaign groups
  • Keeping casework up to date and responding to public enquiries
  • Meeting constituents on a wide range of issues, including those of a sensitive nature and escalating accordingly
  • Advocating on constituent’s behalf with relevant bodies to resolve matters
  • Maintaining information systems to support communications and data protection
  • Working with other team members to maintain and grow social media presence in Glasgow
  • Reviewing social media trends in Glasgow and briefing comms and parliamentary officers in issues of relevance to my parliamentary role
  • Updating the other team members on your work

About You

Requirements

  • Have an interest in politics with the confidence to represent a Member of the Scottish Parliament
  • Demonstrable ability to foster good working relationships with colleagues and external stakeholders
  • Have flexibility in using relevant IT skills and writing styles, covering both traditional and newer forms of media
  • Experience in using social media in a professional manner, in a paid or voluntary capacity
  • Good organisational skills
Desirable
  • Experience in organising, running and reporting engagement events/discussions.
  • Be steeped in the region, ideally with lived experience of it but most importantly knowing it, its people and issues, well.
  • Experience in using Adobe Premiere Pro to high standard in a work or voluntary capacity.
  • Experience in using caseworker.mp.
  • Experience in strategic planning for campaigns, particularly in relation to social media.
